Although it is not exsactly known by whom the Castle of Bayburt,which stands on the north of the city,is constructed,it is possible to find out some clues through the depths of history.Because in the pages of historiy it is knowm that the people who had lived in this region had different races,bliofs and traditions and had usually been in war with each other.It is accepted thet Castle of Bayburt and other ruins of castles in this region are built bye the people living in this region in order to reinforce their deffence since the very early ages that these wars came out.

We see the first records in the tablets which tell the attacks King Suppiluliuma the 1st and his son Mursil the and to Gümüshane,Bayburt,Erzincan which is named as Azzi land during Hitit’s Age,(in 1380-1305 BC).These tablets are found out in Bogazköy during the years 1906-1912 by the German archeologist Hugo Winckler.It is wrieewn in one of these tablets that:The people have been frightened when they have seen that their castles on high and rocky mountains are occuppies one by one by the Azzis in the battle.The elderlysof the city come to the king and knelt ontheir knees.These expressilens show that there had been castles on steep and rocky mountains in this in this region,It is strongly probable that those castles are Castle of Bayburt.
